Journey to Christmas Porch Decorations
The Journey to Christmas
I’ve fallen in love with porch decor that is charming and a little unexpected. My rusty little beach bike has been put to good use on my porch ready to be called into service by Old Saint Nick to deliver presents. We live where Christmas is for short sleeves and lights adorn the cacti, making the bike an almost logical Christmas decoration. I love the idea of making the journey to Christmas each year in our hearts. We travel along our pathway all year, beginning with resolutions on January 1st to make improvements and pursue dreams. We begin hopeful and determined on our path, but likely hit a few bumps in the road–and for some, more than just a few. When we see December in the headlights, we realize that another year is coming to an end and it’s time to make peace with where we are now. Our hearts soften, we count our blessings, we stop to really think about our loved ones. That, to me, is the journey to Christmas. It’s not surprising, then, that a bicycle is part of my Christmas porch decor. It symbolizes the Journey to Christmas for me and for each of us.

I rigged a little platform for empty wrapped boxes by cutting a piece of plywood to rest over the rear wheel well, supporting it with a leftover piece of trim. It might not be ready-to-ride, but it looks sweet and festive all decked out for Christmas. If your porch isn’t very protected from wind, then you should use ribbon to tie the packages and platform onto the bike, wrapping through the top tire spokes and around the presents. You might also want to glue the presents onto each other so that the stack doesn’t shift. I hung a pre-lit wreath, topped with a bow (thank you Bow-dabra) I made from silver wire-edge ribbon, from the handlebars. Finally, I wrapped twinkle lights around the bicycle.
